Compositions 8 &9 (Capacity to learn & Independent thinkers)

As children do we have a natural ability and motivation to take up new interests (such as languages, sports and musical instruments) which as adults we seem to lose? Are there too many social pressures on adult or are there other reasons for the apparent decline in a human being's capacity to learn?

The learning ability varies from person to person. There are many factors that affect ones learning; age being one such factor. If children have a greater natural ability and motivation to learn than adults it is because studying is their main occupation and they have no other occupation. After the age of twelve their intellectual faculties like thinking and analyzing sharpen. Their grasping power is more. Till they complete their studies they have no responsibilities at home or work responsibilities. They can concentrate on studies fully. There are no worries or tensions that can distract their minds.

The adults have four major goals in life-personal, family, work and social. Hence they have multiple roles to play. They are burdened with responsibilities like work, family and social life. They have many targets to fulfill. The adults have to run the house, manage the kids, fulfill their little demands and also maintain a social life. They have to fulfill social obligations. Some may have problems related to work, business or family.

The mind is preoccupied with many things. So they can’t study or learn anything properly. Distracting thoughts are always present. It is wrong to say that the adults lose their natural ability to learn. The mind is never free. For the mind to be able to learn it needs to be totally free from worry or distracting thoughts so that one concentrates well. No intellectual activity is possible if the mind is not free.

After middle age there is a decline in health and efficiency.

Ones attitude, ambition, determination and motivation are equally important. No adverse circumstances can distract the mind if the will power is strong.

Some people say that the best way to raise children is to encourage them to be independent thinkers. Others disagree and say that children need to be taught discipline in order to become successful. Using specific examples discuss these two opinions. State which one you agree with and why.

It is very difficult to bring up children. Some parents are either too strict or too lenient. Some parents feel that the children should be allowed to think independently so that they grow up to be mature and intelligent. Some feel that without discipline children’s development will not be balanced and they cannot be successful in life.

The parents nowadays are educated and broad-minded. They are liberal with their children. They want their children to be independent and confident. They encourage their children to make their decisions and think independently. This makes the children self-reliant and emotionally stronger. Their self-esteem goes up. They become mature and less dependent on parents. They learn to express their ideas and opinions more freely.

Such parents want to be friendly and understanding. They want to be friends with the children so that they can discuss their problems, views and feelings. They don’t want to suppress the personality of the children by being too strict. They don’t want their children to be timid and shy or have any inhibitions and complexes.

Some parents on the other hand feel that is necessary to have some amount of discipline at home otherwise the children will get out of control. The children will be more mature and responsible. They will lack self-control. They will become indiscipline and selfish. They will be self-centered and not adjusting. They can become stubborn and strong headed. They will not have any consideration for others. Children will have a better knowledge of what is good for them and what is not.

In my opinion discipline helps children to acquire qualities like love, affection, sharing, understanding and cooperation, which helps them to adjust to any situation in life. Discipline in homes helps to build up a healthy relationship between children and parents.
