Compositions 24 & 25 (technological & researching)

As technological innovation brings about rapid changes and retraining becomes a life long necessity, industry should take over more and more of the responsibility for education. Write a short essay for a university lecturer, arguing for or against.

Rapid technological advancement is bringing about frequent improvements in production. Industries keep upgrading and improving their technology and manufacturing process. The employees have to be trained and retrained frequently to be able to handle the new technology. Hence the industries must improve their manpower resources as well. It is one of the important factors of production.

Just as the machines get outdated, the skills of the employees also get outdated. They cannot handle new technology. Employees should be retrained from time to time to upgrade their knowledge and skill.
Computer for instance is one such technology, which is improving very fast. The skills acquired soon become outdated and the professionals find themselves at a disadvantaged.

The industries should spend on retraining their employees. Refresher courses should be held in the form of workshops or short term training programmes. There should be regular and seminars. There can be evening courses. The industries should provided loan facilities to the employees so that he can go for further training.

Enormous effort is put into researching and marketing 'the perfect potato chips' while research into stress work, for example is ignored. How important are staff working conditions? Should employers research and improve the working conditions of their staff or should they concentrate more on their product?

In this age of competition, companies must continue to upgrade and improve the quality of their product if they wish to survive in this age of competition. They must get their returns quickly before the technology of the product becomes outdated. Hence, they spend a considerable amount on product research and market research.

There is another area that cannot be ignored and that is manpower resource. Manpower is one of the factors of production. To fulfill one’s target the company must have an efficient staff. To encourage the employees to put in their best, the working conditions should be very comfortable and pleasant.

The industries must upgrade their machinery or provide new equipments. This will increase the output and efficiency of the staff. For instance an individual can do a far superior job by working on a computer then on an outdated typewriter.

There should be good seating arrangements for those who work for longer hours at the table. The working conditions should be safe for those who work on machine. Special care should be taken of their safety and health. Medical assistance should be provided in case of accidents.

Any condition that contributes to stress should be removed. Proper research and solution should be found for stress as this has a direct bearing on the efficiency of the staff. But many companies neglect this important aspect, but stress can greatly reduce efficiency.

The working hours should not be long. The employees should work in a free atmosphere. For instance in USA the juniors and the seniors can freely give their suggestions and counter-suggestions. New ideas are fully welcomed by the boss.

All the employees should be treated equally. Each and every employee should be made to feel he is special. Every employee makes a valuable contribution there should be no discrimination on the basis of seniority or designation. There should be no exploitation. Right remuneration will improve the working efficiency.
