Compositions 10 & 11 (Home work & possible failure)

Many people believe that parents are too permissive with their children nowadays. Do you agree that this is a problem? Defend your answer.

The parents nowadays are educated and liberal. Education has made realize that they must share the joys, sorrows, thoughts and feelings of their children. They want to provide a free atmosphere to their children for their unchecked development as well as to have a healthy relationship.

They want their children to be independent and confident. Hence they encourage their children to make all their decisions and think independently. This makes the children self-reliant and emotionally stronger. Their self-esteem goes up. They become mature and less dependent on parents they learn to express their ideas and opinions more freely.

Such parents want to be friendly, understanding and broadminded. They want to be friends with the children so that they can discuss their problems, views and feelings. They don’t want to suppress the personality of their children by being too strict. They don’t want to be dictators. They don’t want their children to be timid and shy or have any inhibitions and fears.

However it is not an easy task to bring up children. We see many instances of parents becoming too lenient and over-indulgent. They give in to every little demand of their children. Discipline in homes has become slack. Children take advantage of this and want to have all their demands fulfilled. Permissiveness on the part of the parents can create problems for the children and the parents as well. It can better destroy the happy relationship between the children and the parents if the children get spoiled. The children can have problems adjusting within the family and outside with people.

Each situation has be dealt with separately. It is not always easy to judge when to give in and when not to give in. There should be a balance between permissiveness and discipline. Children should not feel that their parents give in to their demands easily. The children will always take advantage of their parents’ leniency.

Children over 15 should be allowed to make decision about their lives without the interference of their parents or teachers. Society should accept that children mature at a younger age these days and should adjust the two accordingly. Discuss this statement in relation to your own society or a society that you know well.

It is true that children nowadays are more mature and intelligent by the time they are fifteen than their own parents had been. There are several reasons for this. The environment at home and at school is very different. The atmosphere is now free and the teenagers are given more liberty.

The children nowadays have more awareness because of the television and the internet. They are aware of what is happening all around in the society and the world- They watch all types of programs on the television. Some programmes are really educative for the children.

The teenagers are more outgoing. The girls too are given more freedom, and enjoy equal opportunity as the boys. The youngsters are given freedom to go out and see films, eat in restaurants, go for picnics and socialize. This makes them bold, confident and outgoing.

The schools have a lot of extra curricular activities that are designed to inculcate certain qualities in the children. There are various activities like sports, debates, discussions and cultural activities like dance, drama and songs. They develop qualities like leadership, team spirit, competitiveness and how to make decision. The parents and the teachers allow them to make their own decisions.

Hence both the parents and the teachers should accept the youngsters above 15 as mature and allow them to make decisions for themselves. Every individual has a right to make mistakes and learn from the mistakes. There should not be any interference on the part of the elders.
