Compositions 6&7 (Home work & possible failure)

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? 'Schools should not require students to do homework'. Use reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Schools as well as institutions of higher learning give homework to induce the habit of self study in the students and to supplement classroom teaching. Subjects like maths, science, grammar, computer need constant practice and revision.

Whatever is learnt in the classroom has to be again revised at home to assist the memory. Extra sums, exercises and lessons are given for more practice.
Homework, induces the habit of working hard and self-study. It builds up ones confidence and self-dependence. It develops one’s concentration and improves one’s performance in exams.

The students get sufficient time at home after school or college. The time can be partly utilized in recreation and partly in studies. They have no responsibility at home. By studying at home they make better use of time. Otherwise they waste their time with friends or by watching television.

In higher classes where the syllabus is heavy it is not possible for the teacher to complete the whole course in the class. Sometimes certain topics are given to the students to do on their own. This reduces spoon feeding and increases self- reliance. The students learn to read, think and understand on their own.

Education is a lifelong process. It is the duty of the teacher to form the habit of reading and studying by oneself because even after one has obtained ones degree one will need to upgrade ones knowledge or skill from time to time. One must read, study and increase ones knowledge even after ones formal education is over.

Hence schools give homework to the students for their own food. If the students have a negative attitude towards homework and feel that it is a burden on them the teachers should clear this wrong notion.

All schools and colleges give homework to the students. They have to submit the homework the next day and the class teacher checks it. However there are some schools that give very heavy homework and the children are not able to cope up with the load. The children feel that the homework is a burden on them. The children begin to develop a negative attitude towards studies. They begin to lose interest in studies.
Punishment is given to students for incomplete homework. The children hate to go to school. The parents too put a lot of pressure.

The children cannot enjoy their childhood if they are going to be unnecessarily burdened by studies. The child can experience a lot of mental stress and strain. The school years are the tender years. They are also growing years. These are the days to play. He should not be tied down to books all the time.

The children don’t get enough time to play or develop their hobbies and interests. The knowledge imparted in schools is bookish. To develop ones personality fully the children must acquire other skills like drawing, dancing, sports, singing and handicrafts*
The students spend six to eight hours\in school. The schools can allow an extra hour for homework. The teacher can provide necessary assistance to them. The children don’t have to take their work home. The way the children can rid of their fear and dislike of homework. The children will be free to enjoy their free time.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Students learn better when they are not threatened with possible failure'. Use reasons and examples to support your opinion.

In all countries education is exam oriented at all levels - school, college and university. Exams are there to assess the progress of the students on the basis of which promotion is granted to the next grade. The syllabus and method of teaching is designed on this pattern.
Exam are held periodically every week or month and after every term. It induces the habit of studying in the students. The student take their studies seriously. From time to time they are forced to open their books and revise.

If there are no exams the students will take their studies lightly. The will not make profitable use of their time by studying. They will spend most of their time watching television or playing with friends.
Some students study only for exams which is not a good practice....
Sometimes the exam system affects the students negatively. Threatened with possible failure they develop examphobia. They then undergo a lot of mental stress. They experience feeling of fear, despair, envy and frustration.

Exam makes some students very indifferent to studies. The students develop the habit of studying only at the last moment. They try to memorize without understanding what they are learning. The students’ chief aim becomes to get through the exams rather than to acquire knowledge. Some pick up the bad habit of cheating.

The parents put a lot of pressure on their children to perform well in the event of failure the children resort to suicide in order to escape blame, punishment and criticism.
The examinations should be abolished so that the students are spared a lot of suffering. They will be able to study in a free atmosphere. There will be less pressure from parents and teachers. They will be able to cultivate a love for learning.
