Compositions 37 & 38(laboratory experiments & animals do not suffer in any way)

Higher mammals such as monkeys have rights and should not be used in laboratory experiments.

Medical science has made great progress: we have cures for all types of diseases. Some of the diseases have been totally wiped out from the earth like small pox and plague. Research is still going on to understand the nature of diseases and find cures for them. Scientists for instance are trying to wipe the menace of malaria but so far they have achieved little success.

Medical progress is not possible without laboratory experiments. These experiments are carried out on animals such as rabbits, frogs, monkeys, rats, dogs and so on for they are all mammals. This is so because human life is more valuable than that of animals. New drugs and new medicines have to be tested on animals before they can be used on human beings. The medical firms keep a ready stock of animals for checking the quality of drugs manufactured in the company to ensure that they confirm to the standards laid down and that the medicine is safe and effective.

Monkeys are preferred more in many experiments because its anatomy is exactly like that of man. But since they are intelligent animal they experience more suffering than other animals. In fact all animals, not only monkeys are intelligent, sensitive and have feelings. There should be a ban or import or export of monkeys for the same purpose.

Animal rights activists are against the use of animals in laboratories. They assert that there should be no unnecessary experiments to promote one’s professional or educational career. No cosmetic substances should be tested on animals. Animals should not be dissected in educational tabs. There is no need to test variants of drugs already known. There should be a mandatory provision for anesthesia to avoid causing suffering to the animals. There should be rules covering all areas of animal experimentation, breeding, stocking, experimentation, conditions under which the experimentation, registration of establishments supplying and using animals and so on.

Experiments can be performed on the lesser mammals. Experiments should not be performed repeatedly on the same animal. It is impossible to replace animals in all experimentations but we can take good care of animals. We should keep them in good conditions. We should minimize the pain and suffering caused to them.

Chickens are just one example of animals being kept in inadequate conditions for the benefit of human beings. Write an essay - ‘Animals should not be used for the benefit of human beings unless the evidence that the animals do not suffer in any way'. Do you agree or disagree.

Animals are useful to man in many ways. Man is the most intelligent animal. He learnt to domesticate animals and now makes them serve him. Since ages man has been using animals for his benefit.

He rears, hens, goose, ducks, etc in poultry farms, as they are egg laying animals. Chickens are huddled up in large coops were there is no space for them to move. They often attack and injure one another. Some of them get injured seriously and their open wounds catch infection. This infection can be passed on to others. To prevent this they are sprayed with chemicals.

He rears cows, buffaloes, goats, etc. which give milk. Dogs are kept to guard homes. Oxen, buffaloes, horses, camels and elephants are used to lift loads. Frogs, rats, rabbits, monkeys are in laboratory experiments for medicinal research. Many animals like monkeys and snakes are used to perform in street shows and films.

Some economics depend totally upon breeding of animals like New Zealand, Denmark and Australia. Dairy farming is a major occupation in these countries. There are large sheep farms in Australia, Patagonia and South Africa.

There is nothing wrong in using the animals for his animals for his benefit but man should not ill-treat them. They are living creatures and suffer pain if tortured. They should be given good food and health care facilities when ill. These animals lose their liberty and work hard till they grow old and can no longer serve man. They don’t live a life of liberty like the animals in the jungle. Being the cleverest among all it is the man’s duty that he treats the animals unselfishly
