IELTS Reading Material

IELTS Reading Material
IELTS Reading Material for Above Average Applicants
IELTS Reading Section
IELTS Reading test section is different for the Academic module and the General Training module. IELTS reading material for Academic module usually contains 3 text passages, which consist of 13-14 questions. These questions are to be answered based on what you read in the IELTS reading material. The General Training module usually has smaller texts for reading, so IELTS reading material for General Training module includes 3-5 text passages. Both the modules contain about 40 questions each, which need to be answered in a time limit of 60 minutes.
IELTS Reading Material: Where, What and How
IELTS reading material can be articles taken from books, newspapers, magazines etc. The different questions that are asked based on the IELTS reading material include:

Fill in the blanks
Match the following
Sentence completion
Short answer questions
Diagram/ flow chart completion
IELTS Reading section requires that you practice reading. If you have a habit of reading books, magazines or even newspapers, then solving the questions asked in the Reading section is not a big problem. When you read a lot, you know how to approach a passage, what the writer wants to communicate or what the main idea of the passage is. By practicing reading, you will come to know how to find answers for the questions in the limited time.
Some IELTS reading material may be very interesting to read, others may be boring and you will find some, in which even a single word won’t be clear to you. While practicing you have to create strategies on how to handle different passages.
Since you have got limited time, reading the questions first and then finding the answers from the passage can prove to be helpful. You can also go for a simple scanning of the passage, which means that you can have a look at the main and sub headings. This will give an idea about the topic on which the IELTS reading material is based.
Those who have never read even a newspaper in their lives should start the preparation by reading at least one newspaper every day. Those who are into reading can continue their reading habit by reading books, magazines, newspapers etc and make a summary about what they have read. This practice will help in identifying the main ideas of the article.
Practicing with reading section model papers will also help in getting an idea of how the real IELTS would be. Practicing a lot will help in knowing how to find the answers from the given passage, how to avoid certain areas of the IELTS reading material, how to concentrate on the main idea and it also increases your speed in finding the correct answer. In other words, practicing helps in knowing how to scan a passage for getting the information and how to use the skimming method for getting the cream of the matter or the main information.
IELTS Reading Material for Above Average Applicants
Applicants who have a reading habit will have an idea about how to select the appropriate IELTS reading material. The reading style of each person will be different from the others. Some may sit and read each sentence, word by word. Others may give a quick glance, and then start reading in a very easy way. They may skip some lines if it is not interesting.
For the IELTS Reading test section, a deep reading may not be considered advantageous, as you have a limited time limit. Sitting and wasting your time for a single passage can be risky, as you have got other passages to read. So, for the IELTS, how good you are as a reader is not important but how fast you can find the answers is more important.
