Compositions 14 & 15 (child and television & population)

Children now watch more television than at any time in the past. Consider the potential risks and benefits. Give recommendations.

Television has now become a very important medium of entertainment in homes. Any spare time is spent in front of it. The elders and the children alike spend a good number of hours watching television programmes. This is because there are a variety of channels and programmers to cater to the tastes of all the age groups.
In towns and cities as many people live in high-rise buildings children have less space to run around and play. This is one of the reasons why the children are confined to their homes and end up watching television.

There are many benefits of watching television. The children have awareness about what is happening in the society and in the world. They watch news items, sports, cartoons and science fiction, defective serials and movies especially made for the children. There are educational programmes directly related to the subjects taught in schools as well as general knowledge.

However there are many adverse effects of watching television. It directly interferes with the children’s studies. They devote less time to studies. Their performance is severely affected. If their results are poor it can spoil their career. They will not get admission in good colleges or universities.

Poor quality television serials and films and the violence and crime shown in them have a bad effect on the minds of the children. They try to imitate what they see. This is why crime committed by children is increasing day by day. Another adverse effect is that the children start living in a world of fantasy.

Nowadays few children love books and have reading as their hobby. They don’t try to cultivate other hobbies and interests too.

Continuous hours of watching television can spoil the eyesight. It is also not good for their general health. They get no exercise if they sit on the soft and watch television. The children should be running around in their growing age. It will be good for their bones and muscles. They can otherwise become fat.
Watching television can actually make the mind dull, as it is not being taxed. The mind does not indulge in any creative activity.

There is less social interaction. So the communicative skills of the children do not develop.
When the children watch adult programmes they become mature before their age.

In every household there should be fixed timings for watching television. Discipline is necessary so that the children listen to the advice of the parents. The parents should set good examples to their children and not watch the television the whole day. They should watch television programs selectively.

Some governments say how many children a family can have in their country. They may control the number of children someone has thought taxes. It is sometimes necessary and right for a government to control the population in this way. Do you agree or disagree. Give reasons for your answer.

The population of the world is increasing day by day. It is reaching dangerous proportion. This is particularly so in the developing nations. China for instance has the highest population. India is not far behind and in a couple of years its population will exceed that of China. Something needs be done soon. There are several reasons for this.

One reason why the people don’t give a serious thought to that problem is the high level of illiteracy in the poor and developing nations. As a result they don’t understand the importance of family planning and checking the growth of the population. They also have outdated ideas about the number of children they should have. They believe it is destiny that will decide how many children they should have and that it is a sin to control the number of children.

In the developing countries 80% of the people depend on agriculture for their livelihood and live in rural areas. Farmers are often illiterate and believe that the more the number of the children more will be number of helping hands. As a result they have more mouths to feed and cannot care for them properly.
Population explosion in developing countries retards the progress of the country. It leads to widespread poverty and other related problems like unemployment and exploration.

People are basically selfish and they see things from their point of view. They don’t think it is a semi-social problem having many children. So it is the government that has to control the population. China once made a rule that there should be only one child per family in order to curb the population. It achieves remarkable progress.
The Indian government is now making it imperative for the politicians to have not more than the children otherwise they can’t participate in political activities. The Indian government organizes free camps sterilization. The government can provide benefits like cash awards for sterilization, a reduction in income tax, the number of children is not more than two and some other free facilities. Likewise a penalty can be impossible if the number of children exceeds two.

In Australia the government offers a lot of benefit schemes to couples if the number of children exceed two, as the population of this country is reducing fast.

It is a difficult task for the government to control the population. The government should take bold step to tackle the problem. The population growth rate affects other sectors like economy, employment, agricultural growth, poverty and so on. It is also a world problem for if the population is not kept in check it can lead to shortage of food. World food production must go on increasing to feed the governing the number of months. Population explosion can destabilize world economy.
